What Baby Carrier Should You Buy? Honest Review

Sharing is caring!

As with a lot of parenting practices I’ve come to adopt, I never thought I’d be a babywearer. Especially not one who went through upwards of 4 carriers trying to find the best baby carrier Australia provides.

To read my tried and tested reviews of structured carriers and fabrics wraps, scroll down. Otherwise jump to the bottom of the page for a comprehensive FAQ about babywearing!

My Recommended Baby Carriers

When I was pregnant, babywearing was an activity I associated with the limber, vegan mums I met at yoga and as an egg eating, stiff bodied lass, I felt it was something that just wasn’t for me.

Oh ho ho, how I was wrong.

When my daughter came home from hospital, my husband and I became aqquainted with what’s known as the fourth trimester.

After Googling frantically “types of baby carriers” and “best baby wrap for newborn” we realised we needed a moby wrap or some kind of baby wrap to swaddle up our angry bundle and we needed it quick!

Unfortunately, when I was pregnant we bought a pretty cheap baby carrier (it had good reviews) that seemed a bit flimsy and I attempted to justify the purchase by saying “all  baby carriers are the same anyway”.

No. That’s bs. All baby carriers are not equal.

The Best Baby Carrier Australia Has?

Took a long time time find, honestly. It took trial and error. Below you’ll find a list of what we tried.

I remember taking this photo for a Babywearers Facebook Group to see if I had it tied correctly (I didn’t)

Soon after, I bought (in my opinion) the best newborn carrier – a Moby wrap.

I tried to navigate the lengths of fabric around myself like I’d seen on Youtube. After about 2 weeks I seemed to figure out how to properly support myself and my little baby and it was pretty awesome having her close and having my hands free.

The only problem was it was hot. Super hot. I mean I got it in black what was I expecting? *gif*

I also didn’t love the way it showed off the extra weight I had at the time. What this baby wrap did do for me however was it opened the door to the “carrier lifestyle”.

I could get out and go walkabout without a big clunky pram, I could keep my daughter’s precious cheeks from well-meaning, albeit pinchy older ladies.

It was great.

Lillebaby Australia

A few months into babywearing. I bought the LILLEbaby Essential Carrier. I was looking for a carrier that was comfortable on my back, breathable enough for Elliott and also cute. Tick, tick, tick!

The LILLEbaby offered more lumbar support than I’d been getting previously and it had a hood so I could breastfeed while babywearing. I had been reading ergo baby carrier review and the lillebaby was very comparable at a fraction of the cost!

The front pocket was super handy for fitting my keys and debit card. There was only one problem, it was too big.

Best Baby Carrier Australia

Because Instagram and Facebook are sneaky stalkers, they knew I had been looking at baby carriers and recommended a brand to me, Ankalia Textiles. They are based in Tasmania and all their products are made here in Australia, handwoven by locals. (Plus they’ve got pretty funky designs!)

The community on FB and Instagram for Ankalia products is thriving and their customer support is rather excellent too.

I was sent the Ankalia Swift and Up Buckle Carrier featuring Cyathea Entrust (peach and copper coloured) to review and enjoy. After a few lessons from various pro babywearing friends and some tips from the Ankalia website, I was feeling more secure in my abilities to carry my little around.

I even tried it as a baby back carrier!

We weren’t confident enough to back carry outdoors at that time but it was so handy around the house for cooking and cleaning!

The Up carrier is suitable for infants up to around 2 years of age, depending ontheir height.

Ankalia offer gorgeous ring slings also.

Best Toddler Carrier

We realised as our daughter got older that it became harder and harder to get her to want to be in the carrier. What helped with this? Back carrying!

Back in 2019 I partnered with The Sleep Store and Boba   to celebrate the launch of their newest baby and toddler carriers the Boba X.

Our model is a Boba X in Denim Rain. Both my husband and I have gotten extensive usage out of this carrier. The velcro extenders mean that my daughters legs can sit higher up when she’s back carrying and the padding seems extra comfy for her. The stitching is of incredible craftsmenship and the buckles are stiff but secure.

Our daughter is of walking age now, and doesn’t like to be “contained” by much. These are the baby carriers and toddler carriers I still recommend though.

Frequently Asked Questions About Baby Carriers:

What baby carrier is best

After reading this post, wouldn’t you agree that it’s rather subjective! It comes down to a few factors.

  • Quality and Safety
  • Price Point
  • Design and Features
  • Look and Functionality

Your needs won’t be the same as another family and their baby/toddler won’t be the same as yours.

Can baby carrier cause back pain

Absolutely! If you have a poorly made carrier or you haven’t adjusted to straps or positioned the fabric correctly on you, you’ll feel lumbar strain.

What baby carrier is best for breastfeeding

The one you’re most confident using! Most straps can be adjusted safely, stretchy wraps are notoriously easy to breastfeed in. It’s a matter of whatever is most comfortable for yourself and your baby as to what baby carrier is best for breastfeeding. (Maybe don’t try back carrying though, lol).
